The Tuskegee Study
ConfirmedRECORDEDINDEXED · RT-006
A US Public Health Service study followed about 600 Black men in Alabama and withheld treatment for syphilis even after penicillin became standard.
What the record shows
- Roughly 399 men had syphilis and about 201 were controls. They were not told the truth about the study.
- News reports ended the study in 1972.
- In 1997 President Clinton formally apologized on behalf of the United States.
Claimed, but not shown
Claims that the men were deliberately infected are not supported. The documented wrong was withholding treatment and lying to participants.
Verdict
Confirmed, and officially acknowledged with an apology.
