Chemtrails

The theory says white trails behind aircraft are secret spraying programs. Atmospheric scientists say they are .

Background

Contrails are line-shaped clouds that form when hot, humid jet-engine exhaust meets very cold air at altitude. Whether a contrail disappears quickly or spreads out and lasts for hours depends on how humid and cold the air is. It was understood well before the theory appeared, and it was observed in the Second World War.

The 'chemtrail' theory took shape in the late 1990s, helped by early internet forums and a misread 1996 US Air Force research paper about future weather modification. The theory claims governments or companies spray chemicals from aircraft to control weather, reduce population, or study the effect on people.

What the record shows

Timeline

Checking the claims

The claim: some trails persist and spread out, so they must contain chemicals. What scientists say: persistent contrails are expected when the upper air is humid, and the spreading is caused by the same humidity and wind. Air quality testing and soil samples cited by believers have been checked and traced to ordinary sources of minerals and pollution.

Another claim is that spraying is secret and global. A program that large would need thousands of pilots, mechanics, chemists and suppliers to stay silent for decades, and would leave a visible supply chain. No such evidence exists. Researchers publicly studying solar geoengineering have proposed small experiments, but these are discussed in the open and are not the same thing.

Claimed, but not shown

No evidence of a secret, large-scale spraying program has been found. Persistent trails are consistent with known weather physics.

Verdict

Debunked: independent scientists find no evidence of spraying, and the physics of contrails explains what people see.
